Ok, let’s get a few things out in the open.
I love clothes. I worked on the The Times fashion pages for nearly 10 years, followed by stints at Marie Claire and Red magazine. I find clothes for myself. I find clothes for my children. I find clothes for my friends. I am a fashion feeder.
All of that said, comfort is my Queen. Alice’s WFH style formula is simple: joggers + sports sock + smart-ish top (if necessary; Zoom, y’know) otherwise a smart-ish sweatshirt. I’d like to call the result luxe loungewear, in truth, my daughters say it ‘just a bit skanky.’ Which is harsh, but probably fair.
But then I got a new job. The time between being told and buying a ‘few new bits’ was no more than 25 minutes.
And so that is the background to this newsletter, or more specifically, my first 10 new job looks. In creating them, usually in a hurry at 6.30am, I had just one criteria: to feel like myself.
It was my friend Betty who suggested that I photograph myself for this Substack newsletter (thank you Betty, I owe you an iced black Americano). Her and the rest of the school mums who have seen me on a daily basis for the past 8 or so years, were, I think, apprehensive about how I’d cope without the joggers. Here is the photographic results.
All clothes that are still available, linked in their price. For those that aren’t, I have found alternatives where possible.
Look One
One of my new bits, is this awesome skirt from Next. I’d seen a girl on the tube in a long black skirt, and knew immediately my wardrobe required one. After an extensive online search, this looked to be the best of the bunch, and such a great price too. I am not disappointed.
My t-shirt is Arket, I have a lot of the same style in different colours, each is as equally perfect as the others. My shoes are Birkenstocks; they are the exact side of chunky that I was after (a Christmas present from my parents, in case you were wondering).
Next skirt, £35, H&M t-shirt, Arket t-shirt, £17, Birkenstock shoes, £205
